 Santorini Island, Cyclades Islands, Greece

Wanna give your summer vacation a twist and make it the most memorable of the decade?

Visit Santorini Greece and you will have the chance to see up close one of the most amazing sights nature has created.the mysterious Santorini Volcano!

Santorini Island, which was originally called Kallisti (the most beautiful one) and Strogyli (the round one - due to her shape) was formed by a sequence of volcanic eruptions, which took place some 3,600 years ago and affected the geological setting of the whole Aegean.

The destructive volcanic explosion which took place around 1550 - 1500 B.C. consequently led to the submergence of the central part of Santorini, creating a huge lagoon-like basin of 83 square miles, the magnificent Caldera, one of the most photographed landscapes of Greece.

After the primary eruptions the caldera had the shape of a ring. During the Minoan eruption all earlier Santorini settlements including the renowned Minoan City of Akrotiri merged into the darkness due to a subsequent tsunami, probably leading to the eventual decrease of the Minoan civilization in Crete. Therefore, parts of the Caldera ring collapsed leading to its current shape which includes water passages between the volcanic islets.

The Santorini volcano includes all 3 islets located opposite the Island of Santorini (Thera), namely Thirassia, Palea Kameni and Nea Kameni, constituting the youngest islands in the Aegean and the most recently activated volcanoes in Europe. The three islets have been formed after 12 eruptions which occured sporadically since 195 B.C. and have steep cliffs and few beaches. Thirassia is the only inhabited islet and has a quaint small harbour and sparkling white houses.
