Aside from the trademark windmills of the island, Mykonos (Mikonos) Island is not especially renowned for its sightseeing attractions. It does however, possess some very interesting historical, religious and archaeological sites and monuments, which are definitely worthwhile the visit.

THE PANAGIA OF PARAPORTIANI CHURCH
The Panagia of Paraportiani Church is one of the main attractions of the island, located in the Kastro area in Mykonos Town. It is a traditional whitewashed church, built in the 16th and 17th centuries in an asymmetrical manner with five small chapels on two stories, all of which communicate.

ALEFKANDRA (“LITTLE VENICE”)
The area of Alefkandra, or as it is also called, “Little Venice” in Mykonos Town is the most charming place on Mykonos Island, with colorful houses and balconies hanging over the deep blue Aegean Sea and many seaside cafes and tavernas. Alefkanda was once used by the pirates to load and unload their goods. Many visitors come to “Little Venice” to admire the spectacular sunset view.

THE WELL OF GIANNAROS
The Well of Giannaros is located in the settlement of Platis Gialos, Mykonos and is a large underground granite stone cistern. Inside the well there is a staircase leading to its bottom.

THE THREE HELLENISTIC TOWERS
The three towers are in Platis Gialos, Mykonos and the area in which they stand has been named “Portes” by the locals. It is believed that the towers were used in ancient times to defend the island.

THE WINDMILLS
The trademarks of Mykonos, located in Mykonos Town, are the most picturesque features of the island and are its main attraction.

THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM
The Archaeological Museum in Mykonos Town contains mainly findings from the ancient site of Rineia, including pottery, bronzes, statues, amphorae, clay idols and grave stones.

THE MARITIME MUSEUM
The Maritime Museum in Mykonos Town has several impressive displays of model ships, maps, nautical instruments, amphorae, ancient coins, etc.

THE FOLKLORE MUSEUM
The Folklore Museum in Mykonos Town is full of various objects of everyday Mykonian life, such as photos, furniture, sculpture and musical instruments. It also includes a library and a significant collection of historical documents.

THE PANAGIA OF TOURLIANI MONASTERY
The Monastery of Panagia of Tourliani is situated in the village of Ano Mera and possesses a lovely wood carved icon screen that was crafted in Florence. Its architecture is quite impressive, while the monastery also includes a small museum with Byzantine and Renaissance icons, woodcarvings, ecclesiastical objects, liturgical vestments etc.

PETROS THE PELICAN
Mykonos mascot and the most loved animal on the island. Thousands of visitors take their picture with Petros, as if he were the latest box office celebrity from Hollywood.
