Elounda, Lassithi, Crete (Kreta) Island, GreeceElounda is a small picturesque fishing village on the Elounda Bay, close to Agios Nikolaos (Saint Nickolas), in Lassithi Prefecture, on the island of Crete, Greece. It is one of the most popular areas in Crete, with lots of tourists and has several hotels, hotel apartments, villas, suites, offering luxury and budget accommodation. There are several crystal clear water beaches in Elounda (Poros Beach, Chiona (Hiona), Agia Marina, Amoudara, Driros, Plaka etc.), nine of which are awarded the Blue Flag by the EU. Elounda is the closest major town to the former leper colony of Spinalonga. The disease LEPROCY was one of the most feared diseases of ancients times.
The Spinalonga island (official name Kalidon - also called "The Quiet Island") is located next to the village of Elounda and opposite to Plaka beach. In 1579 the Venetians built a fortress on the island on the ruins of an ancient acropolis. Today the island is unoccupied and it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area. You may visit Spinalonga by boat from Elounda or Agios Nikolaos.
