Kavala Prefecture, Greece

The prefecture of Kavala is one of the most organized prefectures in Greece, with an exceptional tourist infrastructure that cater for both winter and summer vacations. The picturesque settlements, the cosmopolitan capital, the natural sites, the historical sightseeing attractions and the hospitable inhabitants make it one of the most enchanting areas in Greece. The prefecture of Kavala belongs to the geographical district of Macedonia and is bordered by Drama in the north, Xanthi in the east, Serres in the west and the Strymonikos gulf and the gulf of Kavala in the south. The prefecture of Kavala has a population of 136.000 inhabitants.

Kavala, the capital and port of the prefecture, is an extremely picturesque town that is characterized by its eastern features. The medieval castle, the old tobacco storehouses, the Town Hall, the Municipal Library, the Municipal Museum, the Turkish building Imaret, the old Kamares aqueduct, the Panagia district in the old town, the churches of Panagia and Agios Panteleimonas, the Monastery Agios Syllas, and the sand dunes in the region of Nea Peramos, are some of the sightseeing attractions of the marvellous town of Kavala.

Wandering around the beautiful prefecture, you will come across the charming hamlet Eleftheroupoli, the scenic fishing village Keramoti, the secluded coastal village Loutra Eleftheron, and the cosmopolitan holiday resort Nea Iraklitsa, which is known for its lovely beach. Furthermore, the picturesque coastal villages Nea Karvali and Nea Peramos as well as the wonderful hamlet Hrissoupoli are also worth visiting. However, the finest sightseeing in the Kavala Prefecture is the magnificent archaeological site of Philippi and its museum, as well as spectacular Mt. Paggaio, a breathtaking natural site, with organized with mountaineering shelters and a ski center. Located next to the archaeological site of Philippi is the baptismal font of Lydia, where the first European Christian woman was baptized. THASSOS
Island

On the southeastern side of the gulf of Kavala lies Thassos, a magnificent insular resort of Macedonia, which covers an area of 380 sq. km., has a coastline of 115 km and has 13.500 inhabitants. At the island of Thassos, which has an organized tourist substructure, you will find mountainous and coastal landscapes of unique natural beauty as well as cosmopolitan and secluded settlements that shall impress you. Thassos or Limenas, the capital, is a scenic small town with white tile-roofed houses and the famous ancient town. Theologos, one of the oldest and most beautiful villages, Limenaria, a popular coastal village, Panagia, the former traditional capital, Potos, one of the most amazing resorts, are some of the places that you should definitely visit.
